It’s a new year, and for everyone, it comes with new opportunities. Students are not left out here. Nigerian students have even more opportunities now to pursue their dream careers and profession.
Each year, many scholarship and fellowship opportunities are thrown open for eligible candidates. While some of these opportunities come up once in a while, others happen annually. Here, we’ll take a look at the undergraduate scholarships for Nigerian students.
1. PTDF Scholarship Programme
Offered by the federal government of Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources provides this scholarship opportunity to Nigerians. Eligible Nigerian undergraduates, Masters students, and PhD students get the opportunities to study in the UK, and other countries, as well as some upgraded Nigerian universities. The undergraduate level of this scholarship scheme is awarded for Nigerian studies only. Keep an eye on our updates and new posts, as the application dates will be made open when it goes live.
2. ExxonMobil Nigeria Scholarship
Open to Nigerian undergraduates, Mobil Nigeria National Undergraduate Scholarship Awards provide an applaudable opportunity to students from every state of the nation.
Funded by Mobil Producing Nigeria, about 500 undergraduate students benefit from the scholarship programme annually. However, students who hail from the operational states/communities (Rivers and Akwa Ibom States) stand a better chance to get the award. Also, the best 50 candidates from the selection tests get a merit award. Other students are selected based on fair geographical spread and merit. It’s good to note that the scholarship awards are not for all disciplines. It’s basically for some Engineering departments, Geophysics, Medicine, Geology, Computer Science, Agric science, and some related fields.
3. Bilateral Educational Agreement (BEA) Scholarship Awards
Annually, the Federal Ministry of Education provides scholarship opportunities for Nigerian undergraduates, Master’s students, and PhD students to study abroad. The Federal Scholarship Board organizes this scheme.
All applicants must consent to undertake a compulsory one-year course on foreign language as all the countries where beneficiaries go to study are non-English. Undergraduates who apply must be in the defined fields of study while Master’s and PhD students from all fields can apply if eligible. Undergraduates must be between the ages of 18 and 20 while the age limit for Master’s and PhD students is 35 and 40 years, respectively.
4. Agip Undergraduate Scholarships
A leading oil company, Agip, offers 100-level students of Nigerian tertiary institutions the opportunity to become beneficiaries of its scholarship award schemes. Often, this scheme comes in two categories; National Merit Award and Host Communities Merit Award. While the former is for applicants who are not from host communities (Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Imo), the latter is for those strictly from host communities. It’s good to note that multiple application leads to outright disqualification.
Students from host communities can apply for the scholarship irrespective of their field of study. However, those from non-host communities are meant to be studying Geology, Engineering, Agricultural Science, or Geosciences.
5. NLNG Scholarships
This is an annual scholarship every Nigerian student should look out for every year as it’s open to students at all levels of study. Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) offers various initiatives geared towards supporting education, and Scholarships are one of them. Having been active for two decades, this scholarship scheme is open to undergraduate students in Polytechnics and Universities, as well as Master’s and PhD students in the UK who are pursuing professional studies.
NLNG offers a 4-tier scholarship programme – Post Primary (for pupils), Undergraduate, Overseas Postgraduate, and Internally Displaced Person Scholarships. Having sponsored over 2,800 undergraduates and spent over NGN600 million in the Undergraduate scholarship programme, NLNG has opened its portal for new applicants.
6. NNPC/Total Undergraduate Scholarship
In collaboration with Total Upstream Companies in Nigeria (TUCN), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is offering an annual national scholarship award scheme to Nigerian undergraduates. Intending to promote a quality workforce and academic excellence in the country, this scheme offers NGN150,000 to each beneficiary every academic year.
Applicants must be full-time 100 or 200-level undergraduates of any recognized university in Nigeria and can show proof with documents. However, students who scored less than 200 in UTME or have a CGPA of less than 2.50 are not meant to apply. You can obtain more details on the criteria for eligibility and how to apply here.
7. NPDC/SEPLAT Undergraduate Scholarship
This is an annual scholarship for Nigerian undergraduates in recognized Nigerian universities. Eligible students are invited to apply for the scholarship awards. Hosted by Seplat Joint Venture (Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc and Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Ltd (NPDC)), the programme was created to promote human capacity building and educational development.
NPDC/Seplat Scholarship pays a sum of NGN150,000 annually, throughout the beneficiaries’ undergraduate studies. Applicants must be at 200-level or and should apply online. Shortlisted students will be contacted, and the exam date announced.
8. MTN Foundation Science and Technology Scholarships
Open to Nigerian second-year undergraduates in different academic fields, MTN Foundation aims at catering to the school bills of excellent students. MTN is one of the leading telecommunication network providers in Nigeria awards a maximum of 500 successful and qualified students in the science and technology field, scholarship.
However, eligible students must maintain a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 and must maintain the same until graduation. After application, the brand shortlists candidates for further screening. This annual scholarship programme entitles each beneficiary to obtain 200,000 each year until graduation, only if they abide by the terms. Click here to learn more about the application process.
9. Agbami Medical & Engineering Professionals Scholarship Award
In a bid to build manpower through the engineering and medical sectors, Star Deep Water Petroleum Limited, a Chevron company, offers scholarships to qualified Nigerian students.
This university scholarship award is open to undergraduate students who are in their first or second year of studies. Funded by Star and its Agbami co-ventures, they offer NGN100,000 and NGN200,000 for Engineering and Medical students, respectively. Applications are submitted through Scholastica, where you must have an account and must have uploaded all the necessary documents.
Shortlisted students will get an invite via text message and email. So, it’s paramount that applicants must have and use an active phone number and Gmail account, as well as stay close to them.
10. SNEPco National University Scholarship
Shell Nigeria Exploration Production Company provides undergraduate scholarship awards annually to full-time undergraduates in certain fields of studies in any recognized Nigerian university.
Shell offers scholarship grants to beneficiaries for the remaining part of their student’s program. All applicants must have a minimum of 3.5 CGPA as at the time of application and must have a minimum of seven credits (Mathematics and English are inclusive) in their O/Levels. 11. Lagos State Scholarship Award
The government of Lagos State offers Foreign and Local scholarships to its residents and indigenes. For Local scholarships, applicants must be a Lagos indigene and a full-time student in any tertiary institution in Nigeria. Foreign scholarships are for students who hail from Lagos state and school in any recognized foreign tertiary institution. Often, interested applicants are meant to buy a scratch card and apply online.
