The Annual Vegetarian Resource Group Scholarship awards graduating U.S. high school students who have promoted vegetarianism in their schools and/or communities. Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or fowl. Vegans are vegetarians who do not use other animal products such as dairy or eggs.
Applicants will be judged on having shown compassion, courage, and a strong commitment to promoting a peaceful world through a vegetarian diet or lifestyle. Three or more recommendations (including at least one teacher) are required. Applications may be submitted through mail or email. Please visit the scholarship’s website for more information.
About the Vegetarian Resource Group
The Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public on vegetarianism and veganism and the interrelated issues of health, nutrition, ecology, ethics, and world hunger.
In addition to publishing the Vegan Journal, VRG produces and sells cookbooks, other books, pamphlets, and article reprints, the Vegetarian Resource Group’s health professionals, activists, and educators work with businesses and individuals to bring about healthy changes in your school, workplace, and community. Registered dietitians and physicians aid in the development of nutrition related publications and answer member or media questions about the vegetarian and vegan diet.
Scholarship award
One award of $10,000 and four awards of $5,000.
Eligibility
Applicants must be graduating highschool at the time of application.
Application process
Applicants are to submit their application via email or mail.
Document you’ll need to include with your application are:
- Documentation related to your promotion of vegetarianism in high school and/or community.
- Application form.
- Recommendations or references.
- Transcripts.
A 500 word essay discussing the following topics:
- How you promoted vegetarianism in your high school and/or community

4. What you learned/what you would do different.
5. How you expect to promote vegetarianism in college and beyond.
6. Your future goals.
7. Your strengths.
8. Your weaknesses.
9. Your “perfect” life in five years.
10. Why you should receive this scholarship.
11. How you became vegetarian and why you are vegetarian.
12. How you define vegetarian.
13. Why vegetarianism is important to you.
14. What else is important to you.
15. What vegetarian foods you would recommend to a non vegetarian.
16. What restaurants you would recommend to a non-vegetarian.
