The Vice-Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarship (prior to 2023 named the University of
Waikato International Excellence Scholarship) was established in 2015 to promote educational
opportunities, foster internationalisation and support talented international applicants who are
enrolling as new students into undergraduate or postgraduate programmes1 at the University of
Waikato. The Scholarships are tuition fees credits and have a value of up to NZD$15,000 for
undergraduate students and up to NZD$15,000 for postgraduate students, and are awarded to
applicants who have demonstrated excellent academic achievement. Successful applicants will be
called upon to become global ambassadors for the University of Waikato.
The University welcomes applications for the Vice Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarship from international students who are new to studying at the University of Waikato, and who will be coming to study here for face-to-face study in 2023. Students who study online with the University are not eligible to apply for the Vice-Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarship, with the exception of students who choose to study at the Waikato China Learning Centre (CLC) at Hainan University.
Eligibility
To be eligible, applicants must:
1.Be a citizen of, or currently studying in, one of the countries listed above;
2.Not currently be enrolled at the University of Waikato (including the Certificate of Attainment in Academic English, the Certificate of Attainment in Foundation Studies, the International Diploma of Business or Science or any other pre-degree pathway programme);
3.Not have paid fees at the time of application;d) be applying to enrol in an undergraduate or postgraduate programme, as a new student to the University of Waikato;
4.Not be classified as a domestic student (see clause 7.3.d);
5.Have met the University of Waikato’s English language requirements for admission, or have an offer for the Certificate of Attainment in Academic English at the University of Waikato, prior to beginning any studies through UOW;
6.Have received a conditional or unconditional offer of place from the University of Waikato;
7. In the year of tenure, be commencing a full-time programme/s of study with a total duration of at least 12 months at the University of Waikato;
8.Be residing in New Zealand for the tenure of the scholarship and may only study a maximum of 50% of their course online (if this option is available);
9.Not be coming to the University of Waikato via a sponsoring body;
10.Not be coming to the University of Waikato on a Guaranteed Credit Arrangement,or through a study abroad or student exchange agreement;
11.Have a minimum GPA-equivalency of B+
Application process
pplications for 2021 can be submitted at any time but applicants must be overseas at the time of submitting their application for the scholarship, and must submit their scholarship application prior to lodging a visa application to travel to New Zealand. They need to furnish a personal statement that answers the following questions:
• What are your career goals/aspirations?
• How will an international education experience help you to achieve these goals?
• What additional qualities/skills do you have that make you an ideal candidate for this scholarship and an ambassador for the University of Waikato?
