SOAS university and Hyundai Motor Group scholarship

Up to five £27,730 in scholarships is offered by SOAS University of London through their collaboration with the Hyundai Motor Group. The scholarship is designed to create meaningful change and empower African students in postgraduate degrees to find solutions to global challenges. Additionally, scholarship recipients will get to participate in various networking events and seminars hosted by the donor during and after their studies, which will later on help them apply their expertise to careers across the African continent.

The Hyundai Motor Group is a South Korean chaebol headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. Through this collaboration the Hyundai company aims to cultivate experts for sustainable development in Africa and will continue to establish long-term collaboration models for the next generation of Africa with their scholarships.

Scholarship overview

Scholarship recipients will be invited to participate in various networking events and seminars hosted by the donor during and after their studies. They will also be able to participate in academic and networking activities as alumni of the Hyundai Motor Group Scholarship. The value of the scholarship is divided as follows:

Master’s award: £27,730 from which tuition fees will be paid in full. If the tuition fee charge is less, the difference will be provided as a stipend.

PhD award: Cover tuition fees for three years of full-time study as well as the tuition fee for writing up in a 4th year.  An annual stipend (£22,780 in 2025/26) will be provided each year and paid in termly instalments. 

Applicants to courses within the College of Development Studies, Economics and Finance and College of Law, Anthropology and Politics are particularly encouraged to apply.

Eligibility

The requirements to be an eligible candidate for this scholarship includes:

  • Be an African National who is a resident of Africa.
  • Be a fee-paying international applicant
  • Be applying for programmes starting in 2025/26.
  • Be in the top rank, as evidenced by references and transcripts.
  • Applicants for the MA scholarship must possess or expect to be awarded an international equivalent to a first-class honours degree from a UK university.
  • Applicants for the MPhil/PhD scholarship must possess or expect to be awarded with an international equivalent to a master’s degree with distinction from a UK university.
  • Applicants with a 2:1 may also apply, but will not be given preference.
  • Have applied to SOAS but are not required to have received an offer of admission by the scholarship deadline. 
  • Meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS, if applicable.
  • Part-time courses and 2-year master’s courses are not eligible.

Assessment criteria

  • Applicants will be assessed based on their academic merit by a selection panel. 
  • Applicants will also be evaluated on how the subject of their study is aligned with the vision of sustainable African transformation and growth.
  • The assessment of your application will be based on the information provided in your scholarship application and in your online application for admission. The panel will review details such as degree results, personal statement and other relevant information.
  • Applicants must submit a complete application of their programme as soon as possible and then submit an application for this scholarship in order to be considered. Please note that complete applications for admissions can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of the year.
  • Applicants will need to have an unconditional offer for their programme by the time the Scholarship Panel meet.
How to apply
  1. To apply for the SOAS and Hyundai Motor Group scholarship, Applicants must first separately meet the entry requirements for the programme they are interested in, then apply online with the link provided in the respective SOAS University of London application page.
  2. After that, applicants can go ahead and apply for the scholarship by filling in all the information in their online application form and submit before the deadline.
