The Lagos state scholarship board was established following the Lagos State Executive Council resolution LSEC (68) of October, 1968. Lagos state scholarship board started from a rented apartment in No 75 Brickfield Road, Ebute-Metta when it was established in 1968. It later moved from that rented house to a government building in Maryland in 1992. Few years later, the Board was on the move due to the State Primary Board which took over the office accommodation. On the 27th of February 1995, the Board moved to its present site at 254, Ipaja Road, Beside NYSC Orientation Camp, Agege. The law establishing the Lagos state scholarship board was reviewed and assented to by Mr. Babatunde Raj Fashola, SAN on 27th September, 2012.

The board’s policy

  • Ensure that all State Annual Scholarships are advertised.
  • Make awards only to deserving students of Lagos State Origin.
  • Consider the adequacy of the qualifications of applicants for their proposed courses of study, evidence of good character, evidence of satisfactory progress report where the applicant is already in the university.

2023 scholarship fundings

Governor Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved the payment of N375,455,000.00 for both fresh and subsequent scholarship and bursary awards. This fund is designated to alleviate the financial burdens faced by Lagosians pursuing higher education in the country. Abdur-Rahman Lekki, the executive secretary of the Lagos state scholarship board disclosed this at a recent meeting held with key stakeholders in the sector, adding that the approval is in line with Mr. Governor’s unwavering commitment to advancing education within Lagos state.

Breaking down the allocation, Abdur-Rahman Lekki detailed that N164,500,000.00 has been earmarked for:

  • 2021/2022 Fresh Scholarship Award for Undergraduate, Masters & PhD (Batch B).
  • 2021/2022 Subsequent Scholarship Award for Undergraduate & PhD.
  • 2022/2023 Subsequent Scholarship Award for Undergraduate & PhD recipients.
  • 2022/2023 Governor’s Discretionary Awards.

Similarly, the Executive Secretary revealed that, as part of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S plus agenda, the Lagos state scholarship board is set to introduce special categories of scholarships, focusing on the poor and vulnerable, as well as people living with disabilities. This aligns with the intensified emphasis on social inclusion, gender equality, and youth in the coming four years.
