MOE Taiwan Scholarship Program

MOE Taiwan Scholarship program is granted by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) to encourage outstanding Nigeria students to undertake degree programs in Taiwan. It offers study opportunities for a wide range of disciplines at universities in Taiwan. This program also aims at promoting people-to-people relationship between Nigeria and Taiwan, and increasing bilateral academic and educational links of higher learning as well. Likewise, focal point of the program is to develop outstanding and prospective professionals and experts to meet the needs in a global village. Scholarship applications must be submitted to a Republic of China (ROC) overseas mission and applicants must apply separately to a university or college in Taiwan for admission.

Scholarship benefits

The Taiwon scholarship program covers the following:

  • NTD 40,000 (approximately $1,250) each semester for each recipient’s approved tuition and miscellaneous expenses. 
  • Monthly stipend:
    • Undergraduate: NTD15,000 (approximately $468) ;
    • Master: NTD20,000 (approximately $625) ;
    • Doctoral: NTD20,000 (approximately $625).

Duration of scholarship

  • For an Undergraduate program: maximum 4 years.
  • Master’s program: maximum 2 years.
  • Doctoral program: maximum 4 years.

After satisfactory completion of a degree-study program, the student may apply for another Taiwan Scholarship for a higher degree. However applicants must note that the maximum total length of awards is 5 years

Eligibility

Interested applicants must:

  1. Be a citizen of Federal Republic of Nigeria
  2. Be High school graduate or above.
  3. Demonstrate an excellent academic performance in most recent formal academic experience.
  4. Be of good moral character, and do not possess criminal records.
  5. The following people do not qualify for the scholarship:
    • An ROC national or an overseas Chinese student.
    • A person who already has and is continuing to maintain student status at any university or tertiary college in Taiwan or a person who has already registered to begin studies at a university/college in Taiwan. This restriction does not apply to a student who will complete a degree and graduate that year. They may apply for a Taiwan Scholarship to pursue a higher degree.
    • A person who has already studied in Taiwan for a degree at the same level as the one in which they intend to enroll.
    • An exchange student or dual/joint degree student who has been admitted to a university/college in Taiwan in accordance with an academic cooperation agreement between the university/college in Taiwan and an overseas university/college.
    • A person who has held a Taiwan Scholarship for a total of five years.
    • A person who has ever had a Taiwan Scholarship or MOE Huayu Enrichment Scholarship revoked.
    • A person who has received any other scholarship or subsidy from any Taiwan Government agency or any education institution in Taiwan. This does not include any subsidy provided for Taiwan Scholarship recipients by a university/college to cover the outstanding amount of their tuition and other fees if the total amount exceeds the maximum amount paid by the scholarship.

How to apply

Application is done directly through individual Taiwanese universities and the scholarship deadline corresponds with the specified deadline set by the universities.

Note:

  • Applicants will be notified of scholarship decision by May 30, 2025.
  • Applicants awarded a Taiwan Scholarship will be required to submit proof/letter of admission to their university/college to Taipei Trade Office by June 30, 2025. Once admission is confirmed, the said Office will issue an official Certificate of Scholarship to the award recipient.

Required documents

  1. A completed Taiwan Scholarship Application Form
  2. A photocopy of the applicant’s Nigerian passport
  3. A photocopy of diploma and transcript of highest degree obtained (Please obtain an authenticated translation if the original is not in English or Chinese. Translated documents must be authenticated by a Taiwan representative office.)
  4. A photocopy of application for admission to a participating university in Taiwan(for example, photocopies of the application fee remittance, the application form, and a notice or email from the university/college acknowledging receipt of the application.)
  5. A photocopy of language proficiency proof:
    • Applications for non all-English study programs: Photocopy of score report or certificate for attaining Level 3 or above on the “Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language” (TOCFL).
    • Applications for all-English study programs: If English is not your native language, a score report for an English proficiency exam, such as the TOEFL, is required.

Note that applicants who apply to a program not included in the Ministry of Education’s English Program List must provide a photocopy of an all-English program proof document issued by their intended university/college in Taiwan.
