The German Bundestag scholarship seeks to prepare African students to actively and responsibly contribute to the democratic development of their countries. Introduced in 2020, the program supports talented and politically motivated university graduates from sub-Saharan Africa. It is intended for candidates who show an interest in Germany’s parliamentary system and who are actively dedicated to advancing democratic principles in their home countries.
The German Bundestag
The German Bundestag is the national parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its seat is the Reichstag Building in Berlin. In the current electoral term, Parliament is composed of 630 Members. This is the 21st electoral term since the establishment of the Federal Republic in 1949. The President of the Bundestag holds the second highest office of state in Germany, after the Federal President. Julia Klöckner (CDU/CSU) has been President of the Bundestag since March 2025.
Scholarship benefits
Selected scholars can expect to recieve the following:
- Participants will receive a stipend of 700 Euros.
- Accommodation will be provided free of charge.
- Travel costs to and from Berlin will also be covered.
- The German Bundestag will also cover the cost of health, accident and personal liability insurance
Eligibility
To be eligible for the German Bundestag scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Citizenship of a participating country (Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda)
- Under the age of 30 at the start of the scholarship/January 1st
- University degree
- Good knowledge of German (at least level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
- Interest in politics, social/political engagement

Applications for the Bundestag Scholarship should be submitted exclusively through the digital application platform IPS digital.

- Letter of motivation in German with your handwritten signature (maximum two pages);
- Copy of passport or copy ID;
- Degree certificate from the university
- Proof of German Language proficiency
